Reading Assignment: Movie Concepts

“Realism and Anti-Realism” Reading Response:

In this writing, the writers discuss the different concepts of realism and anti-realism. My movie choice, The Social Network, depicts the college life of one Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg, who created the internet sensation, Facebook. This realism represents the truth or reality the situation. I decided looking up the real Mark Zuckerberg was a suitable way to tell the reality of the movie. The producers did depict his character differently. The idea of Mark Zuckerberg being a socially awkward, sarcastic nerd is not fully true. Realism refers to the several significant and related ideas that movies usually portray. The producers may have been trying to depict the character in this fashion to display the “normal” socially awkward nerd. This may be more relatable to people. Not a very intellectual, athletic, and funny computer genius that he truly is. Verisimilitude, trying to convince an appearance of truth, is shown through this movie. They try to depict the character as how many people see it and how things could be just like that in real life.

“Looking at Movies: Genre: The Western” Reading Response:

In the film, The Social Network, there is the depiction of daily struggles of one man’s fight to internet fame. This movie can be described as a drama. Drama films show emotional and realistic settings that develop the realistic characters. Realistic characters are used to allow people to relate to the film. In particular, drama films are used to display real life issues and some of the common human struggles faced in society. The character type of Mark Zuckerberg allows people to see the realistic and believable form of an awkward sarcastic nerd trying to show the world what he is made of an to hid his past experiences. This is a common theme portrayed by “nerds” in movies.
